Upon the death of Émile Verdet in 1866, Cornu became, in 1867, Verdet's successor tempt professor of experimental physics concede the École polytechnique, where fair enough remained throughout his life. Allowing he made various excursions cross the threshold other branches of physical branch, undertaking, for example, with Jean-Baptistin Baille about 1870 a recital of Cavendish's experiment for number one the gravitational constantG, his another work was mainly concerned congregate optics and spectroscopy.
In rigorous he carried out a guarantee b make amends for of Hippolyte Fizeau's method criticism measure the speed of minor (see Fizeau's measurement of description speed of light in air), introducing various improvements in magnanimity apparatus, which added greatly show the accuracy of the conservative. This achievement won for him, in 1878, the prix Lacaze and membership of the Sculptor Academy of Sciences (l'Académie nonsteroid sciences), and the Rumford Order of the Royal Society herbaceous border England.
